Mold Damage Help
Most common problem accompanying any water damage is mold. It can be difficult to detect at first, but over time, if left untreated, mold can cause major damage to both the integrity of the structure and potentially to the health of the occupants.
Mold is caused by excessive humidity or moisture. It can be caused quickly, for example, by water from a burst pipe, or slowly over time by a leaky roof or standing water under a house. Sometimes, mold can be caused by high humidity or warm, moist air condensing on smooth, cool surfaces. It is important to clean and dry completely any areas that have gotten wet. Mold often appears in the form of discoloration, from white to orange, green, brown and black. And, mold also gives off a musty or earthy smell.
If you detect mold in your house:- Disinfect and dry the moldy area. It is critical to remove the source of moisture before beginning to clean up because mold growth will return if the area becomes wet again.
- Use non-ammonia soap or detergent, or a commercial cleaner, in hot water, and scrub the entire area affected by the mold. A stiff brush or cleaning pad works well on block walls or uneven surfaces. Rinse clean with water. A wet/dry vacuum is handy for this process.
- Bag and dispose of any material that has moldy residues, such as rags, paper, leaves, or debris. Harder materials such as glass, plastic, or metal can be kept after they are cleaned and disinfected.
- Carpeting can be a difficult problem - drying does not remove the dead spores. If there is heavy mold, consider replacing the carpet.
- If flooded, remove all drywall to at least 12 inches above the high water mark.
- Try cleaning a small test patch of mold first. If you feel that this adversely affected your health, you should consider paying a licensed contractor or professional to carry out the work.
- Air your house out well during and after the work.
Mold damage is covered under most insurance policies. Take plenty of pictures before the cleanup, and notify your insurance company immediately (or 1-800-ADJUSTERS will do that for you). Keep all the receipts and document work done to clean up your mold damage. If hiring a contractor, make sure they are a licensed and reputable business. Always keep in mind that certain types of mold can be toxic, and mold damage is not to be taken lightly.
