A
sinkhole is a natural depression or hole that develops on the Earth's
surface. Sinkholes can be as small as a few square feet or as large
as many hundreds of square feet. Similarly, sinkhole depths can vary
from a few inches deep to many feet. In some instances, sinkholes can even be
hundreds of feet deep.
What causes a sinkhole?
Often
the cause of a sinkhole is erosion underground, particularly of
limestone, the collapse of an underground cave, or when water
underground changes its direction and pattern of subterranean
erosion. Further depression of an underground water table is
also a possible cause of sinkholes. Like a slow acting earthquake,
sinkholes can have drastic results on surface structures and can
devastate property.
