Top 10 Preparedness Tips for Hurricane Season

The record-breaking 2020 hurricane season produced 30 named storms that led to a ton of damage*. To protect yourself and your property from the 2021 hurricane season, we put together ten tips for you, ensuring you stay protected in New York.
1. Plan Your Evacuation Route
If you should need to evacuate to avoid a storm, you want to know the appropriate path ahead of time. If you have time, practice taking the evacuation route so you know where you are going.
2. Prepare a Bag To Go
Gather supplies to take with you that will last a few days. If you have kids or pets, you will need to take even more care with your packing.
3. Stock Up on Supplies
Before the hurricane warning is issued, you want all of your supplies. Once the hurricane is announced, the store will be cleaned out of the goods you need. Stock up on:
- Batteries
- Candles
- Matches
- Plywood and tools to make emergency repairs
- Prescription medications
- Plenty of drinking water for a week
- Food that doesn’t need to be cooked or refrigerated
- First-aid supplies
- Portable NOAA weather radio
If you need to evacuate, make sure these supplies go with you.
4. Take Inventory
Go around your home and document your belongings. If you can do this on video, it’s the best evidence. Just make sure you take the inventory with you if you evacuate or keep it in a flood-proof safe.
5. Review Insurance Coverage
Make sure you have the policy needed to cover your losses. The team at 1800Adjusters can review your policy with you to ensure coverage for your Long Island property.
6. Protect Your Home
There are many ways to protect your home, including:
- Replace rocks and gravel with shredded bark
- Cut weak trees and branches down
- Install storm shutters
- Install hurricane proof exterior doors
- Use tempered glass sliding doors and cover them with plywood during a storm
- Seal any outside wall openings and vents
7. Protect Your Business
Hurricanes can create a lot of damage to your business. Create a plan for your business, just like you did for your home.
8. Monitor the Weather
Even if you aren’t interested in weather forecasts most of the year, now is the time to start watching. Storms can crop up unexpectedly, so you want as much time to prepare as possible.
9. Help Those Who are Vulnerable
If you have older neighbors or family members, help them create a plan as well. They might need your help when the time comes to act.
